What decisions are you making daily that are setting you up for longterm success? You may think you are… but really think about it.
As business owners in healthcare we are faced with constant pressure to fix things quickly, short term thinking.
Most of us are operating on a very short time horizon because the realities of running a small healthcare business demand it.
I recently came across a quote from Jeff Bezos that made me pause (wether you are a fan of his or not it’s a good quote):
“If everything you do needs to work in three years, you’re competing with everyone. If you invest on a 10-year horizon, you compete with almost no one.”
This makes soooo much sense and is hard for most business owners to actually put into practice.
Most clinic owners are forced to think in monthly and one year windows. The pressure of cash flow, staffing, referrals, and day-to-day operations keeps them there. But the businesses that truly become great often think much further ahead, they invest in things that may not payoff greatly immediately, but in the future will pay off with a much higher return.
Things like:
None of these may show up in next months revenue report, BUT 2,5,10 years from now will be the reasons your practice is thriving and doesn’t need you, the owner, to be successful.
Bezoz has also talked about focussing on things that won’t change and not chasing the new shiny trend.
Here’s what won’t change:
Technologiy will change, payers will change, marketing tactics will change, treatment techniques will change… but the foundational pillars to your business will not.
So ask yourself….
“What am I doing today that will matter in the future?”
“What decisions am I making that will help build and scale my mission?”
“What is truly important for future success?”
